A Vision Rooted in Purpose
Cleveland IBC Recycling was born from a simple observation: thousands of perfectly reusable IBC totes were being discarded across Northeast Ohio every year. Businesses treated them as single-use containers, sending durable, high-quality tanks straight to the landfill after just one fill cycle. That waste was both an environmental problem and an economic one.
Our founders saw an opportunity to build something different. By creating a reliable local infrastructure for collecting, inspecting, cleaning, and reselling used IBC totes, they could keep valuable materials in circulation, save businesses money, and reduce the environmental footprint of industrial packaging in the Cleveland metropolitan area.
The early days were unglamorous. Operating out of a small rented yard with one flatbed truck, the team drove from factory to factory, farm to farm, asking businesses if they had used IBC totes they wanted removed. Many companies were paying waste haulers to dispose of containers that had years of useful life remaining. The proposition was straightforward: we will pick up your empty totes for free or even pay you for them and find them a new home.
That vision hasn't changed. Every decision we make still runs through the same filter: does this extend the useful life of a container, reduce waste, and deliver real value to our customers? If the answer is yes, we move forward. If not, we find a better way.
Our Founding Principles
- Waste Is a Design Flaw
Every IBC tote has multiple lifecycles. Our job is to enable each one.
- Local Matters
Serving Cleveland and Northeast Ohio means we invest in our neighbors.
- Honest Quality
We never sell a tote we wouldn't trust for our own operations.
- Accessibility
Sustainable solutions should be affordable, not a luxury upgrade.
The Full Story
The IBC tote recycling industry in Ohio barely existed when Cleveland IBC Recycling started operations in 2015. National container companies focused on high-volume metro markets Chicago, Detroit, Atlanta and the Cleveland-Akron-Canton corridor was an afterthought. Local businesses that wanted to recycle or purchase used IBC totes had to work with distant vendors who charged premium freight rates and offered inconsistent pickup schedules.
Our founders recognized that Northeast Ohio had all the ingredients for a thriving circular container economy: a dense concentration of food processors, chemical distributors, and manufacturers who used IBC totes daily; a robust farming community in Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula counties that needed affordable bulk liquid storage; and a growing demand from sustainability-conscious businesses looking to reduce their waste footprint.
The missing ingredient was a local operator who could tie these supply and demand sides together with reliable service. That became our mission. From the first month of operations, we committed to three promises: we pick up on the day we say we will, we pay fair prices for used totes, and we sell only containers we have personally inspected.
Word spread quickly. A food processor in Mentor told a chemical supplier in Painesville, who told a farm in Chardon. Within 18 months, we had outgrown our original yard and needed a bigger truck. By 2017, we were running three vehicles and covering every county in the Northeast Ohio region. The demand was real, and it has not slowed down since.
The 2020 pandemic tested our operation in ways we never anticipated. When sanitizer and disinfectant producers needed thousands of food-grade IBC totes on short notice, we worked extended hours to meet the surge. When supply chains broke, we maintained ours. That period proved to us and to our clients that local, relationship-based supply chains are more resilient than centralized, long-distance ones.
Today, we operate from a 15,000-square-foot facility in Willoughby with a team of dedicated professionals, a fleet of five trucks, and partnerships spanning six states. We process over 5,000 IBC totes annually and maintain a zero-landfill track record that has been unbroken since 2019. But we still answer the phone the same way we did in 2015 as a local business ready to help.
Key Milestones
A decade of steady growth, driven by a commitment to doing right by our customers and the environment.
The Beginning
Cleveland IBC Recycling was founded in a modest yard in Willoughby, Ohio. With a single truck and a deep commitment to keeping reusable containers out of landfills, our founders began collecting and reselling used IBC totes to local businesses across Cuyahoga and Lake counties.
First Reconditioning Capability
After investing in professional-grade pressure washing and sanitization equipment, we launched our IBC reconditioning service. This allowed us to offer clean, food-grade-ready totes at a fraction of new container prices, opening doors to agricultural and food-processing clients.
Fleet Expansion
Demand for reliable IBC pickup and delivery grew rapidly. We expanded our fleet to three trucks and extended our service area to cover all of Northeast Ohio, from Ashtabula to Akron and everywhere in between.
First 1,000-Tote Month
In March 2018, we processed our first 1,000-tote month a milestone that validated our business model and proved the demand for reliable IBC recycling infrastructure in the Cleveland market. This volume milestone allowed us to negotiate better rates with downstream recyclers and pass savings to our customers.
Zero-Landfill Commitment
We achieved our zero-landfill pledge. Every IBC tote we handle is either reconditioned for reuse, broken down for component recycling (steel cages, HDPE bottles, wooden pallets), or responsibly processed. Nothing goes to waste.
Essential Service During COVID-19
When the pandemic hit, demand for sanitizer, disinfectant, and food-grade containers surged. Cleveland IBC Recycling was designated an essential service and worked around the clock to supply clean, certified IBC totes to hospitals, cleaning product manufacturers, and food distributors across Ohio.
Facility Upgrade
We moved into our current facility on Beidler Road in Willoughby, tripling our processing capacity. The new site features dedicated areas for inspection, cleaning, reconditioning, and inventory staging, letting us serve high-volume commercial accounts.
Water Recycling System Installed
We installed our first closed-loop wash water recycling system, reducing fresh water consumption by 40%. This investment in environmental technology aligned with our mission and cut our operating costs, savings we shared with customers through competitive pricing.
Industry Partnerships
We formalized partnerships with manufacturers, chemical distributors, and agricultural operations across the Midwest, creating a reliable circular supply chain that keeps thousands of IBC totes in productive use each year.
Multi-State Expansion
Our service area officially expanded to cover six states: Ohio, Pennsylvania, West Virginia, Indiana, Michigan, and Kentucky. We added two long-haul trucks to our fleet and established relay partnerships with regional carriers to serve clients beyond our direct delivery range.
Community & Growth
Today, Cleveland IBC Recycling serves hundreds of businesses throughout Ohio and neighboring states. We continue to invest in cleaner processes, faster turnaround, and education about the environmental benefits of container reuse.

Our Values
These are not slogans on a wall. They are the operating principles that guide every decision, every hire, and every customer interaction at Cleveland IBC Recycling.
Zero-Waste Mindset
We believe waste is a design flaw, not an inevitability. Every decision we make from how we process a tote to how we route a truck is evaluated through the lens of waste reduction. Our zero-landfill commitment is not a marketing tagline; it is an operational standard backed by tracked metrics and transparent reporting.
Honest Quality
We grade every container transparently and will never misrepresent a tote's condition. If a tote is Grade B, we call it Grade B. If it is not fit for your application, we will tell you before you buy. Our reputation depends on trust, and trust starts with honesty about what we sell.
Local Investment
We hire from the communities we serve, source supplies from Ohio businesses whenever possible, and reinvest in our local economy. When you work with Cleveland IBC Recycling, your money stays in Northeast Ohio and supports real jobs in your own backyard.
Accessibility
Sustainability should not be a luxury. We price our reconditioned totes to be genuinely affordable 40-60% less than new because we believe every business, regardless of size, should have access to quality containers and responsible recycling services.
Continuous Improvement
We never stop looking for ways to process totes better, faster, and cleaner. From investing in water recycling systems to optimizing delivery routes for fuel efficiency, our operations evolve constantly. What was good enough last year is our baseline, not our ceiling.
Customer Partnership
We do not think of our clients as transactions. We build relationships that last years. Many of our earliest customers from 2015 are still working with us today. That kind of retention does not happen by accident it happens because we treat every customer like a partner.

Small Business Partnerships
We prioritize working with other small and mid-sized Ohio businesses. From the local welding shop that repairs our cages to the cleaning supply distributors we source from, our supply chain stays close to home whenever possible.
Environmental Stewardship
Cleveland's waterways and green spaces deserve protection. By diverting thousands of IBC totes from landfills each year, we prevent plastic and metal waste from entering local waste streams and help keep our region cleaner for future generations.
Community Involvement
We believe that a business should give back to the community that supports it. Cleveland IBC Recycling participates in and sponsors several local programs that align with our mission of sustainability and community betterment.
- Rain Barrel Donation Program
We donate repurposed IBC tote rain barrels to community gardens and urban farms across Cleveland. These converted totes capture rainwater for irrigation, reducing municipal water use and supporting local food production.
- School Recycling Education
Our team visits local schools and vocational programs to teach students about industrial recycling, the circular economy, and career opportunities in sustainability-focused businesses.
- Lake Erie Shoreline Cleanups
Each spring and fall, our team joins volunteer shoreline cleanup events along Lake Erie. As a business that exists to reduce waste, keeping our local waterways clean is a natural extension of our mission.
- Small Farm Support
We offer discounted pricing to small and family-run farms in Lake, Geauga, and Ashtabula counties. Access to affordable bulk water and fertilizer storage should not depend on having a large operation budget.
- Ohio Manufacturing Alliance
We are active members of regional manufacturing and small business associations, advocating for policies that support sustainable business practices and circular economy initiatives in Ohio.

We are exploring partnerships with municipalities to create formal IBC take-back programs and working to educate more businesses about the financial and environmental advantages of container reuse.
Our specific goals for the next three years include: reducing fresh water consumption by 70% through closed-loop wash water systems; expanding our fleet to eight vehicles for broader geographic coverage; launching an online ordering portal for standard inventory; and reaching 10,000 totes processed annually by 2028.
Whether you need a single reconditioned tote or a fleet-wide recycling program, Cleveland IBC Recycling is here to help. We started small, we grew with purpose, and we are just getting started.
