01

Why Choose New?

While reconditioned and used IBC totes serve the majority of applications perfectly well, there are situations where only a brand-new container will do. Whether it is a regulatory requirement, a contamination-sensitive process, or a customer-facing packaging need, a virgin IBC tote gives you absolute certainty about cleanliness, structural integrity, and compliance.

Cleveland IBC Recycling sources new totes from leading North American manufacturers including Schutz, Mauser, and Greif. Every unit ships with full manufacturer documentation, a first-use certificate, and a standard warranty. We stock popular configurations for immediate delivery and can special-order custom builds within two to four weeks.

As both a recycler and a new-container dealer, we offer an honest perspective that most sellers cannot: we will tell you when a reconditioned tote is sufficient and when new is genuinely necessary. That objectivity has earned the trust of hundreds of repeat customers across Ohio and the Midwest.

02

When to Choose New

First-Use Requirements

Certain food, pharmaceutical, and chemical applications require a virgin container that has never held another substance. Regulatory audits may mandate first-use documentation. FDA 21 CFR, USP, and cGMP guidelines often specify that containers contacting product for the first time must be new.

Strict Contamination Protocols

If your product is sensitive to even trace residues such as ultrapure water, pharmaceutical intermediates, or electronic-grade solvents a new tote eliminates all risk. No amount of reconditioning can guarantee the absolute zero-residue state of a virgin container.

Brand & Customer Expectations

When your finished product ships in the IBC itself, a pristine new container reinforces your brand image and meets the visual expectations of downstream customers. First impressions matter, and a clean, labeled new tote signals quality and professionalism.

Extended Service Life

A new tote has its full lifecycle ahead of it typically 5 to 10 years of active use depending on contents and conditions. If you plan to reuse the container dozens of times internally, starting fresh maximizes your return per unit.

Custom Configuration Needs

When you need a non-standard size, specialized valve material, unusual bottle color, or specific UN rating that is not available in reconditioned inventory, a new custom-built tote is often the only option.

Regulatory Export Requirements

International shipments to certain markets (EU, Japan, Australia) may require new, UN-certified containers with specific documentation that reconditioned totes cannot provide. Customs clearance is smoother with manufacturer certificates of conformance.

Materials & Construction

HDPE Bottle

High-density polyethylene inner bottle offers excellent chemical resistance, UV stability, and impact strength. Standard wall thickness of 23 mm depending on capacity. The blow-molded construction creates a seamless interior with no weld lines or crevices where bacteria or residue can accumulate.

Technical Specs

Material: HDPE (resin code 2) | Density: 0.9410.965 g/cm3 | Tensile Strength: 3,1004,500 PSI | Chemical Resistance: Excellent against most acids, bases, and organic solvents | Temperature Range: -40F to 140F continuous

Galvanized Steel Cage

Tubular galvanized steel frame protects the bottle during handling, stacking, and transport. Rated for two-high stacking when full. The cage is welded from cold-drawn steel tubing with a hot-dip galvanized finish that provides 1525 years of corrosion protection in normal industrial environments.

Technical Specs

Material: Cold-drawn steel, hot-dip galvanized | Tube Diameter: 2025 mm | Wall Thickness: 1.52.0 mm | Zinc Coating: 275 g/m2 minimum | Stacking Load: 5,2005,600 lb (2-high full)

Steel or Composite Pallet

Choose between a steel pallet for maximum durability and forklift compatibility, or a lighter composite (plastic/wood) pallet for single-trip logistics. Steel pallets feature four-way forklift entry and are designed for years of repeated use. Composite pallets save weight and cost for one-way shipments.

Technical Specs

Steel Pallet: 14-gauge galvanized steel, 4-way entry, ~45 lb | Composite Pallet: HDPE/steel hybrid, 2-way entry, ~25 lb | Wood Pallet: Hardwood, 4-way entry, ~35 lb, ISPM-15 compliant for export

2-Inch Butterfly or Ball Valve

Bottom discharge valve in polypropylene or stainless steel. Butterfly valves offer faster flow rates for low-viscosity liquids; ball valves provide a tighter seal for viscous or corrosive liquids. Both valve types use the standard S60x6 coarse thread that is compatible with all major IBC manufacturers.

Technical Specs

Butterfly Valve: PP body, EPDM seal, 150 GPM flow rate | Ball Valve: PP or SS 304/316 body, PTFE seal, 80 GPM flow rate | Connection: S60x6 coarse thread (universal) | Pressure Rating: 7 PSI max

UN Certification Explained

If you need to transport regulated or hazardous liquids, your IBC tote must carry a valid UN certification. Here is everything you need to know about what the certification means, how it is applied, and when it expires.

What UN Certification Means

UN certification indicates that the IBC has been tested and approved by the United Nations for transporting dangerous goods by road, rail, sea, and air. The certification mark is permanently molded or stamped on the container and includes the packaging type, performance level, year of manufacture, and authorizing country.

UN31HA1 Designation

UN31HA1 is the standard code for a composite IBC with a rigid HDPE inner bottle and a steel outer cage on a pallet. The "31" indicates the IBC type, "H" means the inner receptacle is plastic, "A" means the outer packaging is steel, and "1" means it is a non-removable inner container.

Packing Group Ratings

The /Y rating covers Packing Group II (medium danger) and III (minor danger) substances. The /X rating covers Packing Group I (high danger) as well as II and III. Most non-hazardous and moderately hazardous liquids require only /Y. Highly corrosive or reactive substances may require /X.

Specific Gravity Rating

Each UN-certified IBC is rated for a maximum specific gravity (SG) the density of the stored liquid relative to water. A typical rating is SG 1.4, meaning the container can safely hold liquids up to 1.4 times the density of water. Heavier liquids like concentrated acids may require a higher SG rating.

Hydrostatic Test Pressure

New IBCs undergo a hydrostatic pressure test as part of UN certification. The standard test pressure for /Y-rated containers is 100 kPa (14.5 PSI), and for /X-rated containers is 250 kPa (36.3 PSI). This test verifies that the container can withstand internal pressure without leaking or deforming.

Five-Year Recertification

UN-certified IBCs must be inspected and recertified every 2.5 years for continued transport of dangerous goods, and the container itself has a maximum service life of 5 years from the date of manufacture for UN-rated transport. After 5 years, the tote can still be used for non-regulated storage but can no longer be used for DOT-regulated transport.
